As I understand it, overlay responses don’t work on Quizbot companions (though they are still available as inputs in the builder). If you did implement them in the future, in my mind they would appear as follow-up text bubbles below your answer once you've tapped it, then after the timeout the experience would advance to the next pane. I think this has great potential for Quizbot, as it would allow us to easily add conversational, crafted responses to each answer without having to create a separate branch for each tailored response.
